Econoline Front Axle Hub

The front hub and brake drum combination is not available aftermarket. The brake drum without the hub is available. It is the same drum used on the Econoline 9" rear axle. You can remove the hub from your old drum and mount it on the new drum.

The "normal" way of pressing out the wheel studs will RUIN both the hub and the drum. Do NOT press them out! Even the machine shops may not know the correct way to do this.

The wheel studs are swedged in to keep them from coming loose. This means a small part of the stud shank is squeezed to make it expand slightly, making it larger than the hole in the hub. If you simply press out the stud, the expanded (swedged) part of the stud will force the hole in the hub to become larger, which ruins the hub.

You must remove the expanded (swedged) material on the stud before pressing out the studs.

The cheap way to do this is to use a 5/8" hole saw without the center drill bit, mounted in a drill press. Slide the hole saw around the stud and cut the swedged material. Use a slow speed and plenty of cutting oil.

The better tool to remove the swedge is the carbide-tipped Goodson Swedge Cutting Tool for $120. Mount this in a drill press, slow speed, using lots of cutting oil.
