• The axle code on the vehicle data plate should be two-digits.
• In 1965, the Spring Special Econoline pickup trucks had a 1 as the third digit in the axle code.
• In 1961-1964, the diameter of the axle gear depended on the size of the engine.
• All axle shafts had 28 splines and small bearings.

The 7-1/4 (7.25)-inch rear axle has a removable cover that faces the rear of the vehicle.

The 9-inch rear axle (above) has a removable carrier housing (third member) that faces the front of the vehicle.

Axle has 2700 lb. or 3050 lb. weight capacity

• 2700 lb. axle was installed from 1963 to early 1965.
• 2700 lb. axle is identified by a square-drive fill plug on the back of the housing.
• In mid 1965 the axles got a thicker housing and increased the weight rating to 3050 lbs. Most of the 3050 lb. axles have a hex-drive plug on the rear, but some still came with the square-drive plug.
• In 1967 the fill plug was moved to the side of the third member. (NOTE: If you swap third members, it is possible to end up with two fill plugs or none.)
• The third member and axle shafts are the same from 1963 to 1967, with the exception of the fill plug location in 1967.
• The U-bolts for the 2700 pound and 3050 lb. axles are different.

The same brake drum is used on 1964-67 Econoline, 1963-67 Fairlane, 1965-66 Shelby GT350, 1966 Falcon, and 1967 Shelby GT350/500.

The rear brake shoes on the 9" axle are the same as all front brake shoes on the 1961-1967 Econolines.
